The Anttila family purchased a detached house built in 2009 in the Metsokangas area of Oulu and moved in nearly two years ago. While the house was in excellent condition, the garden still needed finishing touches. The family's vision was to create a versatile outdoor space for relaxation and shared moments, with minimal maintenance. They did not want to cultivate flower beds or vegetable gardens but rather design a functional and aesthetic garden where they could enjoy both nature and modern outdoor comforts.
The 1800 m² garden originally featured a back terrace, swimming pool, and hot tub. The redesign process began when Heli and Tommi sought the expertise of award-winning garden designer Heidi Hannus, who helped them bring their dream garden to life. The new plan included an expanded 118 m² terrace, acting as the unifying element across the different sections of the yard. Additionally, a 16 m² firepit area was constructed, serving as a grill space during summer months.
The renovation began in autumn 2021, with Tommi's father, Eino, actively supporting the project. One of the most challenging phases was building the garden sauna, particularly due to Oulu’s permit process. However, once approved, the construction proceeded smoothly. The sauna area includes a terrace, a dressing room, and a small guest room. The sauna itself was a pre-built unit from New Sauna, customized with the family’s desired wood-burning stove.

An open pergola instead of a previously planned glass-enclosed summer kitchen, to better suit the garden’s airy and open design
Maintaining the garden is surprisingly easy. A robotic pool cleaner keeps the swimming pool tidy, while water treatments are added as needed. The goal was to create an effortless outdoor space that offers the perfect setting for leisure and relaxation.
Throughout the renovation, additional refinements were made, such as pergola slats and an outdoor shower. The family plans to continue enhancing the garden in summer 2023.
The garden transformation was a major project, but the family is thrilled with the result, which brings joy every summer. Following the renovation, they even started their own business, fulfilling one of their long-time dreams. Beyond a beautiful outdoor space, the process provided them with valuable experience and skills they will use well into the future.
